Liberty Seeking Iranians Bleed in the Street---Obama Gets Ice Cream

In striking contrast today, President Obama and family go for an ice cream in Alexandria, Va while the world is watching Iran from amature video gotten from Iranian citizens risking their lives to get it out. Never mind that the video being smuggled out was of protesters being shot, beaten and burned with acid from above.

I am sure that it was a great father/daughter moment, but since they had to go through a group of protesters outside the White House, it seems like bad timing. I am pretty sure that their chef could whip up some awesome frosty treats without the full suburban parade.

I just see this moment in time as definitive of this President. Lots of talk about wanting to promote change and no balls to carry it out.

What should he do?

1. Call an emergency UN general session meeting. Call for UN pressure on Iran to recognize the Iranian people's right to vote per Iran's own semi-democratic election process.

2. Put out a personal (not written) statement to the Iranian people of our commitment to their rights and commitment to talks with them.

America stands for freedom and liberty. The protesters in Iran are crying for what we take for granted everyday. They do not want to be exactly like the US, they are proud to be Iranian and want to have their voice heard. We can not be the United States of America and ignore this cry. Military is not the answer. Words are much more powerful right now.

President Obama, if you believe in what this country stands for, grab some balls and do something about it. I apologize for disturbing you on your Father's Day weekend, but that is why you get the big bucks!

  1. The minute Americans start to see this as a War the Iranian people must win on their own terms and not on American terms the better! Countries are also entitled to their sovereignty!

Its a case of I can insult my own Mum, but don't you dare to insult her for me!

Obama coming in here would only add steam to the Iranian government's ship! There are international bodies available to step in here! They don't need the United States to call a meeting. Lots of other countries could call it, or guess what??? Even the Secretary General could call one himself.

The Iranian people certainly dont want another Iraq!

  2. Bo,

First off, I believe that everything that I said was that this was the Iranian People's event. No one is debating that. But to remain silent risks an even worse situation.

Many people have said we should stay out because it could worsen our relations. Guess what, they can not get any worse. Second, to do nothing, and this does succeed in generating change, then it will be remembered that we did not even say we supported them.

No one is saying we should tell them to overthrow their government. But rather to declare solidarity with them in their hope for freedom.

As far as another country calling on the UN for a UNSCR or UNSC Emer. Meeting give me one country that will? Both Russia and China have too much to gain from Iran remaining the same. That and I'm not too confident in the Secretary General calling anything.

I don't know if your liberal or conservative so do not take this as a shot at you personally. But for myself, I am pretty surprised that for all the Democrat's screaming of hope and change, its funny that when someone else calls for it they are awfully silent.
